One of the things we love about living at Eagle House in Eccleshall is having so many fascinating historic places within easy reach. Recently, we decided to make a trip across into Shropshire to visit Wenlock Priory and the medieval market town of Much Wenlock.

Much Wenlock had been on our list for a while, partly because we remembered the Time Team episode about the town, so we were particularly keen to see the historic buildings and the remains of the priory for ourselves.

And we weren’t disappointed. If you enjoy history, beautiful old buildings, independent shops and traditional market towns, we think Much Wenlock is somewhere you will really enjoy, especially if, like us, you already love Eccleshall.

The main reason for our trip was Wenlock Priory, and it was definitely worth the journey.

The atmospheric ruins sit just outside the centre of Much Wenlock and are a beautiful reminder of the town’s medieval past. The site has a long history, beginning with an Anglo-Saxon monastery before the Norman foundation developed into the magnificent Cluniac priory whose remains can still be explored today.

Although Wenlock Priory isn’t one of England’s enormous ruined abbeys, we actually loved its relatively intimate scale. There is something very peaceful about wandering around the remains and looking at the surviving arches, walls and architectural details.

The priory is now cared for by English Heritage, and it is fascinating to imagine how impressive the complex must have been when it was a thriving medieval religious house.

There is parking at the site, and we seem to remember paying around £4 for the car park when we visited. Admission was around £10 per adult from memory, although prices do change. English Heritage’s current information is the best place to check admission prices, opening times and parking details before setting off.

If you are staying at Eagle House and enjoy English history, medieval architecture and historic buildings, we would definitely recommend putting Wenlock Priory on your list.

After visiting the priory, we headed into Much Wenlock itself.

The town is particularly charming because so much of its medieval and historic character remains. The old High Street is lined with beautiful buildings, quirky independent shops and interesting little corners to explore.

It immediately reminded us of Eccleshall High Street.

There is a similar feeling of being in a genuine old market town rather than somewhere that has been turned into a purely tourist destination. You can wander around, browse the independent shops, stop for something to eat and simply enjoy looking at the historic buildings.

Much Wenlock has been a market town for centuries, and its history is everywhere.

Our interest in Much Wenlock was partly sparked by the Time Team programme about the town.

We remembered watching the episode and learning about the archaeology and development of Much Wenlock, so visiting the town felt like bringing something we’d seen on television to life.

In fact, the history followed us home!

Once we got back to Eagle House, we rewatched the Time Team episode (Season 1, Episode 3) and this time we kept spotting buildings and places that we’d just seen with our own eyes. It was great fun recognising them and seeing the town from a completely different perspective.

If you’re a history enthusiast or a fan of archaeological programmes, Much Wenlock is a particularly rewarding place to visit.

Of course, no afternoon exploring a historic market town is complete without finding somewhere lovely for tea and cake.

We stopped at Barrow Street Cafe, where we found a lovely selection of cakes and vegan options. Luckily, the weather was on our side, so we were able to sit outside in their pretty little garden area and enjoy the sunshine.

It was one of those simple moments that makes a day out memorable, sitting in the garden with a cup of tea, enjoying something sweet and watching the world go by.

Because our visit was on a Sunday, we also decided to stay for lunch and had the most fantastic Sunday lunch at The George & Dragon.

The food was excellent, reasonably priced and there were vegan options available too.

We particularly enjoyed reading about the history of the building while we were there. Much Wenlock is full of buildings with stories to tell, and we love discovering those little snippets of history as we travel.

It made a very enjoyable end to our visit before heading back towards Eccleshall.

We also hoped to visit Much Wenlock Museum, which tells the story of the town and its fascinating history, including its important connection with the origins of the modern Olympic Games through local doctor William Penny Brookes.

Unfortunately, the museum was closed when we visited on the Sunday, so that gives us a very good excuse to return!

Opening days and times can vary seasonally, so we’d recommend checking the latest information on the Much Wenlock Museum before planning your visit.

Much Wenlock is approximately 26.5 miles from Eagle House Eccleshall, which is around a 40-minute drive, depending on traffic and your route.

It isn’t one of our closest day trips, but that’s exactly why we think it is a good example of the advantages of staying at Eagle House in Eccleshall.

We are ideally positioned for exploring not just Staffordshire but also the neighbouring Shropshire countryside and its wonderful collection of historic towns.

From Eccleshall, you can explore Much Wenlock, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury and Ironbridge, as well as countless villages, country walks, historic houses and National Trust and English Heritage sites.

So rather than staying right in the middle of one tourist destination, you can use Eccleshall as a peaceful base for exploring a whole area.

We came away from Much Wenlock thinking that it is exactly the sort of place our guests would enjoy.

If you like Eccleshall’s historic High Street, independent shops, old buildings and traditional pubs, there is a very good chance you’ll enjoy Much Wenlock too.

Add in the spectacular history of Wenlock Priory, the Time Team connection, lovely cafés and plenty of opportunities for a good lunch, and it makes a wonderful day out from Eagle House.
