A Wild Day Out at Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre – Just Minutes from Eagle House

At Eagle House Bed and Breakfast and Self-Catering Apartment here in beautiful Eccleshall, we’re always looking for local gems to recommend to our guests. Whether you’re staying with us for a relaxing weekend break or exploring Staffordshire on a longer trip, we love sharing the best places to visit nearby. One such place – just a five-minute drive from our award-winning, historical B&B – is the truly special Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre.
Tucked away behind Fletcher’s Garden Centre, this incredible sanctuary is a must-visit for guests of all ages. It’s one of those places that pleasantly surprises you – much larger than you expect and full of fascinating creatures, not just birds of prey as many assume. From monkeys to meerkats, reptiles to raccoons, there’s an ever-growing variety of residents, each with their own rescue story.
Fun, Ethical and Educational
Gentleshaw is a registered charity, and the work they do is truly heartwarming. Every animal there has been given a second chance – rescued from abandonment, neglect, or unsuitable homes. Supporting this centre means supporting animal welfare in the most direct and meaningful way.
There’s a genuine sense of care and commitment here, and it’s clear that animal welfare is always the top priority. Visitors can learn about the animals’ backgrounds, behaviour and care routines – making it both a fun and educational day out. Perfect for families with curious little ones or anyone with a love for nature.
Don’t Miss the Flying Displays!
One of the highlights of the visit is the daily bird of prey flying displays. These are not only thrilling to watch, but also incredibly informative. It’s a rare treat to see these magnificent birds up close, learn about their training and watch them soar in the Staffordshire skies.
Know Before You Go
The centre is outdoors, so we always recommend dressing appropriately for the British weather – bring sun hats or raincoats depending on the forecast! The pathways are mostly flat and accessible, making it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs alike.
There’s also plenty of free parking available, thanks to its location at the back of Fletcher’s Garden Centre – another of our favourite local spots. After exploring the wildlife centre, we love to pop into Fletcher’s for a hearty lunch or a slice of homemade cake in their cosy café.
And don’t miss the charming Hillcote Valley Miniature Railway, which runs on select days around the garden centre grounds. It’s a delightful little adventure for younger guests (and the young at heart!), and always brings a smile.

We’re proud to support such an inspiring local charity, and we know our guests will leave with warm hearts and great memories.
