At Eagle House Eccleshall we often say that the garden tells us what it wants to be. Perhaps the best way to describe our approach is gentle gardening which is relaxed, thoughtful and rooted in nature while still feeling beautifully cared for.

As a small independent luxury bed and breakfast in the heart of Eccleshall, we are incredibly proud to have won the Visit Staffordshire Regenerative Award 2026. For us, this award reflects years of quietly working with nature rather than against it and creating a place where guests can truly slow down and reconnect.

Our garden is organic and no dig, which means we avoid disturbing the soil and allow the natural ecosystem beneath the surface to thrive. We make our own compost, collect water in a water butt and avoid using the hose whenever possible. Sustainability matters to us, but we also believe gardens should feel joyful and abundant rather than strict or over managed.

Balance

There is a balance to it all. We keep the lawns tidy and the borders cared for, but we do not weed excessively or force everything into rigid order. Under our magnificent 200 year old copper beech tree we allow wildlife areas to flourish naturally. Bluebells and primroses wander where they choose and we love unexpected surprises such as Welsh poppies appearing after self seeding from neighbouring gardens. We have learned that the best gardens are often the ones that evolve naturally over time.

Scent is a big part of the experience at Eagle House. We grow many beautiful English roses from nearby David Austin Roses, filling the garden with fragrance throughout the summer months. We also support local businesses including the fantastic Fletchers Garden Centre and Johnsons Nursery.

Alongside the flowers we grow a small selection of fruit and vegetables and often share excess seedlings and seasonal produce with our guests. It is a lovely way to connect people with the garden and the changing seasons.

As we garden gently, wildlife thrives here too. The garden is full of birdsong, butterflies and bees throughout the warmer months and the changing views across the garden and out over the Staffordshire valley are beautiful in every season. Many guests tell us how much they enjoy simply sitting on the patio with a coffee or glass of wine and taking it all in.
