A walk round Trentham gardens and Shopping Village

Trentham Gardens and Shopping Village, in Staffordshire, is a large visitor attraction close to Stoke on Trent. Trentham boasts a beautiful lake, gardens, woods, cafes and shops. Perfect for those wanting a stroll in beautiful surroundings or mooch round the shops. They also host outdoor concerts on various dates throughout the summer.

History

Dating back to 1599, the first Hall built on the site was in the ruins of the old Priory, which stood here. Most of the layout of the gardens date to the 18th century and were designed by the famous  Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who also created the serpentine lake.

The Hall was demolished in 1912 as the industrial revolution meant that pollution no longer made it a pleasant place for the owners to be. They were unable to find a buyer and moved away.  It then became a pleasure gardens for the public and then a military camp in the war.

Owned by the coal board in the 1980’s it was then sold to a private company and opened once more to visitors, after heavy investment, in 2004.

Visiting

Trentham is located about a 15 minute drive from Eagle House, Eccleshall. We spent a sunny afternoon there and visited with our dog.

There is plenty of parking and also some EVC chargers.

After looking round the formal gardens and the old ruined mansion, we had Lunch in the lovely cafe overlooking the Italian Gardens. There were Lots of vegan options and the cake was delicious.

We then walked round the lake, taking in the views and local wildlife. You can go on a boat on the lake for an additional cost and there is also a mini railway but it wasn’t open while we were there.

There is plenty to see round every corner. Lots of metal and wooden statues and curiosities, which made the walk all the more enjoyable.

There are lots of picnic benches across the site, so you could bring a packed lunch. Our dog Teddy very much enjoyed his day out too. There were plenty of water bowls dotted about the place and plenty to sniff.

Afterwards we had a look round the many little shops in the shopping village. There are also plenty of places to eat here too and this area is free to access.

Accessibility

There were lots of loos for such a big place and we were impressed with the free wheel chair hire.

Not all paths are level and it needs someone fairly fit to push a wheelchair round the whole lake.

All in all we would recommend Trentham for a great day out for our guests staying with us at our bed and breakfast or in our Self Cater Apartment.
